چکیده

This paper describes a technique for automatically quantifying the shape of the skull cavity seen on an axial slice in a CT brain scan. The development ofthis algontbm derives from the need to normalise CT scan data acqording to skull size and shape for the purpose of compar;lg new patient data with that from past cases. This algorithm uses image processing techniques to fmdthe h i e r edge of the bones of the skull on an axial slice, so that its shape can be represented by a radius function. A simple m e q e of shape asymmehy is dehned It is also shqwn that this shape can be quantified more precisely by harmonic analysis using the Fourier Transform of the radius function. This paper describes the design of the algorithm and its performance on axial slices taken from a database ofCT brain scans from 528 patients. Kev Words: human brain shaoe. Reduced Skull Sexual Dimorphism in a Local Sheep Breed

This study estimated the magnitude of sexual dimorphism in a relict sheep from Catalunya (NE Spain), called Fardasca, using geometric morphometric techniques. For these analyses, a total of 18 skull specimens (2 adult males and 16 females) were studied. Our results suggest that the breed is not cranially dimorphic, so sex determination using landmarks described here as criteria is likely to yiel...

The ontogenetic origins of skull shape disparity in the Triturus cristatus group.

Comparative studies of ontogenies of closely related species provide insights into the mechanisms responsible for morphological diversification. Using geometric morphometrics, we investigated the ontogenetic dynamics of postlarval skull shape and disparity in three closely related crested newt species. The skull shapes of juveniles just after metamorphosis (hereafter metamorphs) and adult indiv...

The pace of morphological change: historical transformation of skull shape in St Bernard dogs.

Owing to the great morphological diversity of domestic dogs (Canis familiaris), the study of historical shape change in dog skulls provides an excellent opportunity for investigating the dynamics of morphological evolution. Breed standards make known which features were selected by breeders. Here we use the methods of geometric morphometrics to study change of skull shape in a series of purebre...

Size and shape variability in the skull of Myotis nigricans (Schinz, 1821) (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae) from two geographic areas in Brazil.

We present a quantitative analysis of sexual dimorphism and geographic variation in the skull of Myotis nigricans (Schinz, 1821) assessed by geometric morphometrics. Differences in size and shape of skulls were investigated using 30 landmarks plotted on two-dimensional images of lateral and ventral views. Results of geometric morphometrics revealed sexual dimorphism in the centroid size of the ...

The relationship between shape of the skull and bite force in finches.

In finches husking time is non-linearly related to the ratio of seed hardness to maximal bite force. Fringillids produce larger bite force and husk relatively hard seeds faster than estrildids of similar size. This is at least partly explained by their relatively larger jaw muscle mass and a difference in husking technique. However, the effect of differences in skull geometry on bite force is u...
